“… if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20b, NAB)

Matthew 17:20 contains an important key to prayer—faith!  Having faith that God hears our prayers is crucial.  Don’t misunderstand, if we pray and just have enough faith to pray, then God can work with that.  We can also pray and ask for more faith.  Remember the father in Mark 9:24 who cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!”  That should be our attitude toward faith and prayer—let us continually ask God to help our unbelief.

With faith, our prayers are more than just words. Our prayers are powerful because, upon Baptism and Confirmation, we received the Holy Spirit. The Spirit that is within us is greater than the one that is in the world (see 1 John 4:4).  Through prayer, we can go directly to the Throne Room of God and speak to our Creator, our Lord, and our Savior.  We can petition God, thank God, and praise God for all that He does and all that He is!  What a great gift prayer is to us and to the Church.

Over the next week, let us strive to pray daily and continuously.
